Our western culture today is what we would call “refined.” Over time, we’ve shaped and tamed our surroundings to fit our needs, creating a sense of comfort and control over our world. We organise, plan, and prepare, believing we have everything sorted. But do we really?
Nature often reminds us of our limits. A raging bushfire, an unexpected storm, or an unforeseen illness can instantly strip away our illusion of control. We can’t command the wind to stop, the rain to fall, or our bodies to never age—no matter how much we try to delay it with hair dye or medicine. Jesus Himself asked in Luke 12:25-31, “Can any one of you by worrying add a single hour to your life?” The answer is clear: we cannot.
In Job 38-42, God challenges Job with a series of questions about the mysteries of creation—things beyond human understanding. These chapters remind us of an essential truth: if we can’t control nature, how can we ever control the One who created it?
We serve a wild and untamed God. He is not confined by our expectations or limited by our plans. Yet, in His power and majesty, He calls us to trust Him. If we are willing to let go of our desperate need for control and instead follow His lead, what might change? If He is truly our perfect Heavenly Father, as He says He is, how might that transform our lives?
Perhaps the deepest freedom comes not from mastering our world, but from surrendering to the One who already holds it in His hands.
